Photography

A small exhibition of my photos can be seen at Orford Road Tapas Bar , 32 Orford Road during opening hours

I was active in photography before I came to architecture. Taking advantage of the school darkroom and working in black and white I found pleasure in capturing effects of light, framing and or juxtaposition.

After committing myself to architecture, photography took on a supporting role in my career, often acting as a rapid notebook capturing buildings and contexts which might prove inspirational in some way. Colour prints and colour slides became my medium. Picture making was rushed and less deliberate, except when visiting cities and buildings where there might be an opportunity to share pictures with a slide show.

Joining academia freed up some time to enjoy photography more, and provided a captive audience of students in my lecture series. I had already converted myself to digital photography, and was more comfortable taking multiple shots of a scene without using up expensive film. Social media opened up the notion of sharing pictures to others interested in image making; I had an active Flickr account and now share pictures on Instagram within the spirit of spontaneous sharing of quirky sights which have caught my eye.

In parallel with this I had a small exhibition in a Greenwich Community Centre which provided an opportunity to distill my work into a few themes and enjoy the process of printing, mounting and hanging the layout.

From my travels I have compiled a series of photobooks, which are more personal than a travel guide but share some of the character of those. The consistent interest is of the life of both city and countryside and an overlap with my architectural sensibility.
