John Napier

Background and approach

John Napier in Peckham

I am a London based architect and my work focuses on life in the time of climate upheaval. As part of my advocacy of Healthy Buildings and Cities, I help you and your community configure space and activities to minimise your environmental impact. Responding to existing conditions and the local microclimate, my work creates opportunities for interaction between people, technology and nature.

Following initial conversations and agreements with you, options are explored in 3 dimensional models to help you visualise proposals and guide you through the permit process, the detailed crafting of the work to the handover of welcoming and uplifting spaces. Targeting low carbon both in the making of the project and when it is in use, nature based and recycled materials are prioritised and daylight and fresh air adopted wherever possible.

Evolving from an interest in film and time spent in the looser architecture of the tropics, I orchestrate space and movement through framing and interconnection; my architecture avoids the static and the formal and celebrates the relations between spaces, both inside and out.

The theme of live / work lifestyles, which has always been part of my work has come to the fore in new projects and prototypes.  I am keen to support you in your bold regenerative design project.

John has a unique career which includes historic buildings, environmental innovation, high density mixed use projects, tropical resorts and business buildings. He had leading roles on the multi award winning Manchester Civil Justice Centre, the University of Brunei campus, and the British Embassy in Manila.

He has worked with world leading practices including Arup and Denton Corker Marshall. As well as working in practice John taught architecture at the University of Lincoln from where he published a series of peer reviewed articles about facades, daylight and ventilation systems and soft infrastructure as a mitigator to urban flooding.  He has worked with Baca Architects on a variety of flood resilient projects and facilities near water bodies.

He has curated his work in a portfolio under the heading ‘Healthy Buildings and Cities’.
